Saint Patrick’s Day Parade

While the crowd might have been a bit thinner at this years Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Topeka because of the weather, the rain and cold didn’t dampen the spirits of those who did attend. A surprising number of bundled up and stood for two hours in what ended up being constant rain in order to catch a glimpse of the governor, watch the floats and hopefully grab a bit of candy. As our new studio is right in the thick of things, we joined the enthusiastic crowd with camera in hand, hopefully these images give you a sense of the day. Thanks to everyone who came out!

Captivated by the Light

Today we drove to Kansas City and attended a seminar called “Captivated by the Light” with photographer Ed Pierce. This was truly an inspirational afternoon, featuring not just Ed but also several other nationally recognized photographers who appeared via video as well. While there was some repeat of information and knowledge which we already knew, our goal with these seminars is always to pick up at least one or two new techniques or pieces of information that we can use to make your portraits that much better, and Ed delivered on that goal for us today! Want to know what we learned? Call and book your appointment today and see the results in your photos!

Moving in

This weekend we have begun moving in to our new studio space. As we announced in this post, we are in the Tinkham and Veale building at 909 1/2 S. Kansas Ave., Suite A. We have a lot of work to do to get ready for our opening, but have begun work this weekend and are excited to get things rolling! Here are a few “before” photos, we’ll continue to post updates as we progress.

For the historians among our readers, this space was was once part of and best known for being the “Chocolate Shop Restaurant”, although the building dates back to the first decade of the 20th century and was remodeled by architect W.E. Glover in 1923 for Tinkham Veale, a prominent attorney and developer of Westboro.

Youth Career Day Recap

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Youth Career Day hosted by the Downtown Rotary Club at Kaw Area Technical School. Middle-school students from Chase, Robinson, Jardine, Eisenhower, Landon and French were bussed in between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Each school spent about an hour visiting the various career booths and learning about all the different opportunities available in the area.

We were was particularly impressed with how well behaved and polite all the students were. Their questions were thoughtful and they seemed to show a genuine interest at each of the stations that we observed, including ours! The kids seemed to have a great time using our cameras to take pictures of each other, we found that this tactile experience kept them engaged and their attention focused far more than any handouts or lectures we gave, and moved to providing this experience exclusively in the afternoon.

Thanks again to the Rotary Club, the KATS staff and all the great students and teachers. We look forward to participating again in future years as we expand and improve on our presentations!

Year of the Frog

Beginning on Leap Day — February 29th — and lasting throughout the year, AZA zoos and aquariums across the country will celebrate Leap Day to promote amphibian conservation.

DeShazer Studios is proud to work with the World Famous Topeka Zoo to help raise awareness of the role that amphibians play. Look for some of these images to be featured in upcoming flyers and posters for Zoo events that are promoting “The Year of the Frog”!

You can visit yearofthefrog.org for more information on amphibian conservation and sign up to be a “Friend of the Frogs”. They may not be the most exciting creatures you see at the zoo (or your back yard!), but it’s important to realize the importance they play in our world.
